An additional individual has now been charged by UNC Police in connection with a rally on Saturday, following the toppling of the Confederate monument known as Silent Sam on the Chapel Hill campus last week.

Seven arrests were made on Saturday when opposing groups gathered on McCorkle Place, where the pedestal of the Confederate monument remains. Those seven arrests brought the total to 11, including those arrested in connection with the Monday night rally where the statue was pulled down.

UNC Police spokesman Randy Young wrote in an email on Wednesday morning that a new warrant was filed on Tuesday charging an unnamed individual with affray for actions related to the Saturday rally. Young said the warrant had not been served, as of Wednesday morning.

When announcing charges against three individuals last week, Young wrote that the three charged were not affiliated with the university. That same language was not used in Wednesday’s email.

When asked if that indicated the individual charged on Tuesday was in some way affiliated with UNC, Young replied that he could not “confirm identifying information until an arrest is made.”

Of the 11 arrested as of Wednesday morning, officials had said none were affiliated with the university.

Young said the UNC Police investigation into both rallies on Monday and Saturday is ongoing. The State Bureau of Investigation has also been brought in to assist with the investigation.

Another rally expected to bring Silent Sam supporters and opponents is scheduled to Thursday night.
