Less than a week removed from Silent Sam’s downfall at the hands of protesters, people once again gathered at McCorkle Place on UNC’s campus.
Activists from both sides, those supporting Silent Sam and those against the Confederate monument, arrived early Saturday morning to continue the movement. UNC prepared for this rally in advance, sending out a notice on Friday that urged people not to attend.
UNC Police confirmed that seven people were arrested: three for assault, two for assault, destruction of property and inciting a riot, one for destruction of property and one for resisting an officer.
This comes in response to the rally earlier this week that saw protesters tear down Silent Sam from it’s pedestal. Four people have been charged since that incident, with one arrested the night of the toppling.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations has also agreed to assist UNC Police in the investigation.
Protesters were on campus around the remaining base of the Silent Sam statue from roughly 10 a.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. before dispersing.

First individual we have seen taken into custody at #SilentSam rally. He appeared to be standing in way attempting to prevent man with Confederate flag to approach statue. Small scuffle started to break out. pic.twitter.com/w9F20NT7vl
