Three additional individuals have been charged following Monday night’s protest where the Confederate monument known as Silent Sam was pulled from its pedestal on the UNC – Chapel Hill campus.

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt said she could not provide an update on the investigation in a conference call on Thursday afternoon. UNC Police spokesperson Randy Young confirmed on Friday morning in an email that three individuals “not affiliated with the University of North Carolina” were now facing charges.

Young said that UNC Police had filed warrants for three individuals “related to their activities on the UNC campus this past Monday evening resulting in damage to the Confederate Monument on McCorkle Place.”

The three individuals, who were not identified, are each facing charges of misdemeanor riot and misdemeanor defacing a public monument, according to Young.

There is no indication that any of the three individuals are currently in custody.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting UNC Police in the investigation. One individual was arrested early Monday evening before the statue was pulled down and is facing charges of resisting arrest and concealing one’s face during a public rally.

The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may occur.
