UNC Police are asking for public assistance identifying two “persons of interest” as the investigation continues into the night of August 20, where protesters pulled the Confederate monument on the Chapel Hill campus known as Silent Sam down from its pedestal.

That rally then led to two other protests over the next 10 days where supporters and opponents of Silent Sam gathered around the monuments remaining base on McCorkle Place.

Campus police said on Thursday that those with information regarding the identities of those in question or that could otherwise assist the investigation are asked to call (919) 962-8176 or email police@unc.edu.

There have been at least 17 arrests in connection with the three rallies.

The UNC System Board of Governors has ordered UNC – Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt and the campus Board of Trustees to develop a plan regarding the future of the monument and present that to the Board of Governors by mid-November.

UNC officials said on Friday that there was no update available regarding the timeline or process of that work.
