Part of West King Street in Hillsborough is expected to be closed to through traffic this week to repair a collapsed sewer main. Work will begin on Tuesday.
The work will replace a 70-foot section of an eight-inch main near North Occoneechee Street and is estimated to last one week, depending on the weather. King Street will be closed between Nash and Churton streets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the duration of the project, though extended work hours are possible. Steel plates will be placed over the repair site outside of work hours.
Residents and businesses on King Street will be able to access their driveways and on-street parking.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured north onto Nash Street and then east on Revere Road and Corbin Street to Churton Street. Westbound traffic should travel north on Churton Street, west on Corbin/Revere and then south on Nash to rejoin King Street.

The cause of the vitrified clay pipe collapse is not yet known. It was likely installed between the 1930s and 1950s, and while such pipes can last more than a century, bedding issues can cause failures. The new pipe will be made of more durable ductile iron with a special anti-corrosion coating.
