This week’s local government agenda is dominated by budget discussions, with public hearings in Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, Pittsboro and Durham County and work sessions for Orange and Chatham County Commissioners. But that’s not all elected officials are discussing this week: the Carrboro Town Council will hold public hearings on two proposed housing developments, while Chapel Hill residents will have another chance to weigh in on the Housing Choices initiative to increase density in town.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, May 22. This week’s meeting will focus on next year’s town budget: first there will be a public hearing where residents can weigh in, then commissioners will conduct a budget workshop. Get the full agenda at this link.

Orange County Commissioners will also be focusing on budget issues at a work session Tuesday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Commissioners will meet with various county departments, ranging from public safety to solid waste to animal services. Get the full agenda here.

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. Council members will hold a public hearing on two proposed housing developments: a mixed-use building at South Green with 57 multifamily units, and a 72-lot single-family subdivision on 36 acres at Jade Creek, on Old NC 86 north of Calvander. The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, with several key agenda items. First, the council will hold a public hearing on Town Manager Chris Blue’s budget proposal; then, there will be a legislative hearing on the Housing Choices initiative, a proposal to increase density in some existing neighborhoods. The town is expecting a large turnout for that hearing, but the council will not be taking any votes this week; instead, the question will be continued to a second hearing on June 21.

In addition to those two agenda items, the Town Council will also consider an application for UNC Health’s proposed development at Eastowne and a proposed apartment building on Barbee Chapel Road. For the full agenda, click here.

The Orange County school board also meets this week, in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Monday, May 22. Their meeting will include an update on plans for student reassignment and a presentation from the Orange Partnership for Alcohol and Drug Free Youth. Click here for the full agenda.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Budget proposals dominate the agenda for local government in Chatham and Durham Counties this week. The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the budget when they meet at 7 p.m. Monday, May 22. Chatham County Commissioners are holding a budget work session beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 23. And Durham County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on their budget proposal when they meet at 7 p.m. Monday, May 22.
