
Road races on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6 are expected to delay traffic in downtown Hillsborough. Both races are expected to draw more than 800 participants each.
On Saturday, the Tarwheels Bike Fest will begin between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. downtown. A police officer will be on site to intermittently stop traffic at the intersection of South Churton Street and East Margaret Lane as groups begin the race. The cyclists will ride through rural Orange and adjacent counties before returning to Hillsborough around 4 p.m.
The starting line will be on East Margaret Lane at South Cameron Street, and riders will head west. Their route is as follows:
- Margaret Lane to South Occoneechee Street
- South Occoneechee Street to Calvin Street
- Calvin Street to South Nash Street
- South Nash Street to Eno Street
- Eno Street to Dimmocks Mill Road
Cyclists will return to Hillsborough via St. Mary’s Road to Cameron Street and back to East Margaret Lane. For more information on the Tarwheels Bike Fest, click here.
On Sunday, the Historic Hillsborough Half-Marathon and 5K will begin just before 7 a.m. at the Farmers Market Pavilion, located at 140 East Margaret Lane. The 5K route will use the Riverwalk, but the half-marathon route will require brief traffic delays on downtown streets. These include:
- Margaret Lane
- North Churton Street
- South Nash Street
- North Occoneechee Street
- West Orange Street
- West Union Street
- Wake Street
According to the town, the longest delays is expected between 7 and 7:20 a.m. on North Churton Street between King and Union Streets. Runners will also use Dimmocks Mill, Eno Mountain and Orange Grove roads before returning to downtown.
