A rally protesting Silent Sam, a confederate soldier statue on UNC’s campus, is expected to happen on Tuesday night and has resulted in UNC Transportation and Parking making adjustments and closing off some roads for safety purposes.

Cameron Avenue will close to all traffic from Columbia Street to Raleigh Street at 5:30 p.m.

Vehicles leaving the lots during that time period may exit, but no additional traffic will be allowed between Columbia Street and Raleigh Street after 5:30 p.m.

Morehead Lot will close at 3 pm to entering vehicles, however vehicles may remain in the lot until 5:30 pm. Swain Lot will close to the public beginning 5 pm and permit holders are asked to move from the lot by 5:30 pm.

The P2P Express will reroute and not travel any further north than South Road, McCauley Street, and Raleigh Road between 5:30 pm and the end of the event.

The P2P On-Demand will continue to provide as-needed rides but will not drop off patrons to lots north of South Road between 5:30 pm and the end of the rally.

The Public Safety Lot gates will remain down tonight and available only for S1 permit holders.
Chapel Hill Transit will re-route around the Cameron Avenue closure.

On Monday Chancellor Carol Folt released a message to the campus community regarding the rally.
“Our concern is always for your safety and so considering the potential for a highly charged atmosphere and the very real possibility for confrontation with outside groups, we would encourage you not to attend the rally on Tuesday. However, if you do choose to attend, we ask you to stay alert and vigilant. Campus police will be present to help address safety concerns. If you are not attending this event, please avoid McCorkle Place and the area around the Confederate Monument,” said Folt.
