Construction is coming back to Ephesus Church Road at the intersection with Fordham Boulevard after pavement markings were installed incorrectly during a major redesign of the intersection.

Chapel Hill officials say that a contractor for the North Carolina Department of Transportation will be closing the eastbound lane of Ephesus Church Road from Fordham Boulevard to Legion Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily beginning on Wednesday. Work is expected to conclude early next week, according to a release.

According to town e-mails, the issue has been under scrutiny in recent months after a citizen brought an issue to the town’s attention that vehicles were using a striped-off portion of the northbound lane of Fordham Boulevard to illegally pass other vehicles while making a right turn onto Ephesus Church Road.

“Inspection of the recently-paved travel surface on Ephesus Church Road determined the pavement markings were installed incorrectly,” reads a release from the town. “The best option was to mill, repave and reinstall the markings.”

The corrective work is being done “at no cost to the Town of Chapel Hill.”

Travelers wishing to travel east on Ephesus Church Road will be required to continue traveling northbound on Fordham Boulevard, turn right on Europa Drive, turn right onto Legion Road and then turn left back onto Ephesus Church Road. The closure is also forcing a detour of Chapel Hill Transit’s F route.
