The Chapel Hill community is working to help a resident who lost his home and roommate during a storm in June by starting an online fundraiser.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help Marvin Cruz Cordero, a Chapel Hill resident whose trailer in the Tar Heel Mobile Court was destroyed by a fallen tree on June 28Cordero’s roommate, Grijalva Revolorio Abel, died from the tree’s collision with the trailer, according to the Chapel Hill Police Department.

The fundraiser, started by Sam Suchoff, aims to raise $25,000 to help Cordero secure temporary housing, repair damages to his vehicle, invest in permanent housing and find legal assistance to see what value can be salvaged from the trailer.

Suchoff is the owner of The Pig, a barbecue restaurant off Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill. He created the GoFundMe page on July 3 and in the post, he writes Cordero is a key member of the restaurant’s staff.

“Marvin has been part of our kitchen crew at The Pig for over 8 years,” reads the post. “He’s the one in the back frying up your green tomatoes and smoking your chicken. He’s an important part of our family and community.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $4,000 has been raised toward the cause.
