A Franklin County couple, both of whom worked for Piedmont Health, died on Sunday after a scuba diving accident in Carteret County.

The United States Coast Guard said in a release a man and woman died while diving offshore of Cape Lookout, one of the state’s natural barrier islands. The two were identified on Tuesday as Carla May, who was a pharmacy manager for the Chapel Hill location of Piedmont Health, and her husband, James.

WRAL reports the Mays were diving off a boat from Discovery Diving, a scuba tour agency in Beaufort, North Carolina. According to the report, another diver found the pair underwater and unresponsive after the boat’s captain noticed the Mays failed to surface. CPR failed to revive either.
