UPDATE: The Town of Chapel Hill shared an alert saying Fordham Boulevard was reopened to traffic at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
A fallen tree near the Chapel Hill and Durham town lines caused part of one of the area’s most popular roads to close Sunday morning.
An alert from the Town of Chapel Hill and its emergency services team shortly before 10 a.m. shared that the tree was across both south-bound lanes of Fordham Boulevard, also known as U.S. 15-501. The area, which is not far from Interstate 40, would be closed as the tree is cut up and removed.
The Town of Chapel Hill said, however, the closure is between both of Fordham Boulevard’s intersections with Eastowne Drive, which loops around the road to UNC Health’s Eastowne campus. Town officials suggested those traveling on Sunday to consider a different route into town, or to use Eastowne Drive as a detour from the closure.
The local government’s message was unclear when the tree fell across Fordham Boulevard — but a Chapel Hill community member told Chapelboro it happened around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday. It is not the lone instance of fallen trees over the weekend in Chapel Hill. On Friday, during inclement weather across the Triangle, a tree fell and downed power lines on Umstead Drive. The incident also caused a closure to the road for several hours.
