Contractors working on the redevelopment of Glen Lennox apartments will soon be working along Fordham Boulevard to improve access into the complex.
According to a release published by the Town of Chapel Hill on Tuesday, motorists will see an increase in work along Highway 15-501 near Glen Lennox beginning early in February, as contractors remove sections of the median to improve access into the under-construction apartment and retail village.
The workers will be building Glen Lennox Drive, a new road between Brandon and Hayes Roads, which will create access to Flemington and Maxwell Roads from Fordham. Part of creating the new road will involve the removal of some trees in the median of Fordham to allow access to Glen Lennox Drive.
The release said developer of the Glen Lennox Redevelopment Project, Grubb Properties, also is working to emphasize bicycle access to the community. Grubb reportedly worked with urban design firm Copenhagenize to design bike and pedestrian improvements along Fordham Boulevard and throughout Glenn Lennox. Approved plans for the project also include new pedestrian and bicyclist crossing, bike lanes, turning lanes and new traffic signalization for the entrance off 15-501.
Plans for the redevelopment of the apartment community into a mixed-use area have been underway for more than a year. The Chapel Hill Town Council voted to approve offering incentives to Grubb Properties for construction office space within the redesigned Glen Lennox community in March 2019 before approving $2.2 million performance-based incentives in June 2019.
In addition to more than 200 new apartments and office space, the developer plans to add a parking deck, retail space and a clubhouse.
The construction work along Fordham Boulevard for Glen Lennox Apartments is expected to last through March, according to the Town of Chapel Hill.
