Hundreds of Chapel Hill residents near Fordham Boulevard experienced a power outage in the early hours of Tuesday morning due to an equipment malfunction.

The Town of Chapel Hill shared a release saying a power pole malfunction knocked out power along Fordham from Europa Drive south towards Highway 54, and Highway 54 east towards Barbee Chapel Road. Areas including Eastgate, Village Plaza, Glen Lennox and University Place were all affected as around 1,900 Duke Energy Customers were without power.

According to Duke Energy’s website, the outage was first reported at 1:16 a.m. It was later determined to be caused by “equipment going offline.” The website estimated power would be restored by 4:30 a.m.

As of 7 a.m., all customers except two in the stretch along Fordham Boulevard had their power restored.

In the town’s release, the Chapel Hill Police Department is asking motorists to stay alert within these Tuesday morning areas and seek out alternative routes if possible. The outage knocked out traffic lights along the road and crews may still be working to restore power through Tuesday morning.
