One of the main concerns after local school districts voted to close for the organized Day of Advocacy on May 16 was how to make sure students in the schools who relied on free-and-reduced lunch did not go hungry.

Local non-profits are stepping in to help fill that void.

TABLE announced this week that it will be adding extra food to bags that are already distributed to children who receive free-and-reduced lunch in the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools District.

In order to do so, TABLE is asking anyone who can donate to bring apples, shelf-stable boxes of milk, canned tuna or chicken and sleeves of snack packs or crackers to the organization’s facility at 209 East Main Street in Carrboro. The donations are needed by Wednesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m., according to TABLE officials.

When announcing the vote to close schools, Orange County Schools officials said, “The district is researching the options for being able to provide meals for students the day before the teacher workday so that children who need food that they would normally get at school will be able to have that food.”
