The possibility of inclement weather from Hurricane Dorian has prompted Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools and Orange County Schools to close schools three hours early on Thursday.

Chatham County Schools also announced Wednesday night the district will close schools two hours early Thursday.

Durham Public Schools are closed all day Thursday.

All Durham Tech campuses are closed Thursday.

The hurricane has been moving up the East coast after devastating the Bahamas.

Tropical storm force winds are expected to reach central North Carolina late Wednesday and into Thursday with rain moving into the area throughout the day on Thursday.

“The early dismissal will allow us to get our student drivers and bus riders home safely, prepare our buildings for any potential wind and rain, and return our employees safely to their homes,” CHCCS officials said Wednesday when announcing the early dismissal.

Many school districts in the eastern half of the state have announced closures due to the approaching storm.
