Local neighborhoods and authorities are planning to celebrate National Night Out Tuesday across Orange County.

The nationwide initiative has grown locally in recent years. Law enforcement agencies across the county has also been participating and encouraging residents to invite them to their events.

“National Night Out is a community-building campaign to make our community a safer place to live by continuing to build on the great partnerships we already enjoy with our neighborhoods and the people of Hillsborough by bringing everyone together in a positive manner,” Hillsborough Police Sergeant William “Buddy” Parker said in a release.

While events will be held in neighborhoods across the county, Carrboro Police are encouraging residents to come to a larger gathering at the Town Commons from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. for a night of “fun with our local responders, local organizations, and our fellow neighbors.”

Chapel Hill Police are also getting in on the action.

“A strong relationship with your neighbors can be extremely helpful in a variety of situations, and it’s important to start with introductions and a good foundation,” Chapel Hill Police chief and executive director for Community Safety Chris Blue said in a release. “Turn on your front porch light, lock your doors, and head out into the community. Our officers look forward to meeting you.”

This year marks the 35th annual National Night Out event.
