Going off to college can be a really rough time for students. Especially considering the challenges faced outside of the classroom, as many students live away from home for the first time.

On Monday, at the Chapel Hill Public Library, event organizers from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools PTA Council and the Campus and Community Coalition are hoping to help college-bound students prepare for their big move.

“We got together and noticed some gaps in how students are being prepared to transition into college,” Elinor Landess, of the Campus and Community Coalition, told WCHL’s Aaron Keck. “Particularly thinking about mental health and substance use and some of the stuff that’s non-academic.”

Landess said she wants students to be aware of the many mental health and non-academic support resources available in college.

“If that’s something they had in high school, they need to be able to figure out and navigate that path once they arrive in college,” she said.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Chapel Hill Public Library and will include a panel of college officials, a high school counselor and recent college graduate.
