A student made a threat toward a staff member at McDougle Middle School in Chapel Hill on Monday, according to an alert sent to families on Tuesday evening. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools confirmed the incident to Chapelboro, and Carrboro Police said a juvenile petition was issued for threats of mass violence on an educational property.

“The safety of everyone in our school is and will always be a priority for me and my team,” said McDougle Principal Chris Horne said in the message to families, “and I want you to know that the administration has taken this matter very seriously, investigated thoroughly, and applied appropriate consequences as outlined in our CHCCS Community Code of Character, Conduct and Support.”

According to a report from WRAL, the McDougle employee who heard the threat said she felt a breach of trust with the school administration, which did not immediately tell staff when the threat occurred Monday morning.

Horne said there were no weapons involved in the incident, but also said the administration is unable to share details due to student privacy laws.

“Please take this opportunity to speak with your student about the expectations for behavior and respectful, responsible communication here at school,” the principal added. “We have had a safe and enjoyable start to the week, and we look forward to that continuing.”
