The Town of Chapel Hill has canceled in-person summer programs and events in efforts to protect public health amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a release shared on Friday afternoon, the town said among the cancellations are the Fourth of July fireworks display and community celebration, in-person summer camps, public library programs and its Movies Under the Stars series.
“The Town recognizes that these modifications will have a significant impact on both individuals and families in our community, as well as the overall health and vitality of our town, as summer programs and events contribute to well-being and community vitality,” said the release. “However, the Town is committed to prioritizing the safety of staff and residents as it considers what programs and services to re-activate.”
Chapel Hill said the decision was made with guidance from local, state and federal health officials in mind, as well as the interest of community safety. In the release, the town said its aiming to take a methodical approach to reinstating its operations while still protecting public health.
It also said, however, that alternative programming will still be available when it comes to summer camps and the public library.
“Several town departments are working collaboratively with partners for considering alternative programming this summer,” said Friday’s release. “Some programs may be able to continue with modifications. We anticipate being able to share more information about these options soon. Chapel Hill Public Library will scale up its curbside pickup service to all residents in June; additional details will be announced soon.”
The Town of Carrboro announced on Monday its own cancellation of a downtown celebration for the holiday this summer, citing similar public health concerns.
On Wednesday, Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger launched a new campaign, called Safer for Everyone in Chapel Hill, designed to distribute free masks to community members and to educate about the benefits of wearing them.
The full release about the changes to summer programs and events can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill website.
