This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. (Starting this week, we’re doing it weekly instead of monthly – and we’re adding coverage of Durham County as well as Orange and Chatham!)
All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
We’re getting closer to spring, and that means it’s budget season for local governments. City, county, and school district officials are all planning for the next fiscal year, in the context of a still-unfinished and still-uncertain pandemic. In addition, local leaders are focusing on transportation issues – discussing ways to get people around more efficiently, and more safely as well.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Orange County School Board will meet Monday, March 7, at 6:30 in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Board members will hold a work session on the district’s strategic plan and superintendent Monique Felder’s budget proposal for next year. Click here for the full agenda.
The Carrboro Town Council will meet in Town Hall Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. Their primary agenda item is a work session on the “Carrboro Connects” comprehensive plan, which is still being developed. Visit this page to download the full agenda.
The Chapel Hill Town Council will meet virtually on Wednesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. Council members will consider a proposed redevelopment on MLK Boulevard where the police headquarters currently stands; there are concerns about coal ash on that site. In addition, council members will consider a resident’s idea to make Estes Drive more bicycle-friendly; they’ll review a concept plan for residential development on Weaver Dairy Road; and they’ll get updates from the Blue Hill District, the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, and development and transportation at UNC. And Orange County Commissioners are holding a work session on Thursday, March 10, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. The board’s agenda is light this week, led by a discussion of appointments to various boards and commissions. Click here for the full agenda.
Durham and Chatham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners and the Pittsboro town board both have the week off, but in Durham it’s a different story.
Durham County Commissioners will hold a virtual work session at 9 a.m. Monday, March 7. Commissioners will get the results of last year’s resident survey; they’ll hear an update on the county’s transit plan and GoTriangle’s plans for commuter rail; and they’ll get an update on plans for the county’s next property revaluation, which had been pushed back to 2026 due to the pandemic. The Durham City Council has a busy week with two virtual meetings: a regular meeting on Monday, March 7, at 7 p.m., and a work session on Thursday, March 10, at 1 p.m. Thursday’s meeting has the heavier agenda: council members will hear updates on Durham County’s transit plan and GoTriangle’s commuter rail study, and they’ll hold a public hearing on next year’s budget.

Finally, the Durham Public School Board is scheduled to hold a work session at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. The agenda for that meeting has not yet been posted, but it will be available at this link.
