As some community members in Orange County continue adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic and seek aid to pay for housing, the local governments have taken steps to help. Last month, the latest wave of funding to assist Hillsborough residents in need arrived.

The Town of Hillsborough earned $600,000 from the federal Community Development Block Grant program, or CDBG, in January. The funding, awarded by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, goes to local governments to aid low-income and moderate-income residents who are struggling to pay rent or utility costs.

Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver spoke with 97.9 The Hill in the days following the announcement.

“That was huge news,” she said. “For Hillsborough to get that kind of funding is just really tremendous.”

The federal government created the CDBG program so communities can better respond to the various economic and health impacts caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Local governments are chosen through a competitive application process, which also saw the Town of Carrboro and Orange County government awarded $900,000 each.

To distribute the funds, the town government is passing off the funding to the Orange County government and its assistance programs, which Hillsborough also did with its CARES Act funding. Of the town’s more than $166,000 in CARES Act funding, Hillsborough allocated nearly $64,000 for Orange County to use on housing assistance.

“We’re so happy that we have a good partnership with the county to distribute those funds,” Weaver said, “because the county has the existing infrastructure and capacity to do that. We’ll just slide that money right in and will make sure it’s able to get to Hillsborough residents. It’s just so needed right now, so it’s thrilling news.”

According to the federal government, money granted through the CDBG program must be spent in 30 months after its awarded.
