Throughout the summer, the Town of Hillsborough will display a rotation of street banners to honor holidays and celebrate Pride Month. Here’s a complete schedule of which banners can be seen when:
- May 25-June 1 — U.S. and state flag banners to recognize Memorial Day
- June 1-15 — Pride flag banners to recognize LGBTQ Pride Month
- June 15-21 — U.S. and state flag banners to recognize Juneteenth
- June 21-29 — Pride flag banners resumed for Pride Month
- June 29-July 6 — U.S. and state flag banners to recognize Independence Day
- July 6 — Town banners resumed
The Town of Hillsborough has recognized Pride Month since 2018 and designated June as Pride Month in perpetuity in 2022. Juneteenth, which celebrates the emancipation of enslaved peoples in the United States, was designated as a paid employee holiday in 2020.
Hillsborough previously ran into snags in its flag displays after Duke Energy prevented the town from flying flags on electrical poles in 2021. Thus, the town displays banners on poles which had previously displayed flags.
