Chapel Hill started its free mask distribution campaign on Wednesday, according to a release from the town.

For two days each week, Chapel Hill residents in need of face coverings can pick up some for free at two locations. With Wednesday as the first day of the distribution campaign, residents can now visit Fire Station 1 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Fire Station 3 on East Franklin Street to receive masks. According to the town, pickup will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The campaign is to help community members comply with Orange County’s face covering requirement, which is meant to continue combating the spread of COVID-19.

The town government has been endeavoring for some residents to already receive free masks. As part of the Safer for Everyone in Chapel Hill campaign, face coverings have been given out to public housing residents, community partners serving vulnerable communities and at the local food bank distribution. In its release, the town estimates around 5,000 masks have already been shared.

The campaign begins just two days after the Town of Carrboro began its free distribution of face coverings. On Mondays through Fridays, pickup at the police department is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while pickups at the Carrboro Fire Department are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Chapel Hill community members who are interested in donating masks to support this distribution campaign can donate at various locations around town. Anyone with questions or searching further information is encouraged to contact the Housing and Community Department.
