With early voting getting under way this week, the website Triangle Blog Blog has announced its endorsements for the 2023 municipal elections in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

TBB has endorsed Jess Anderson in the race for Chapel Hill mayor, as well as Melissa McCullough, Jon Mitchell, Theodore Nollert and incumbent Amy Ryan for Chapel Hill Town Council.

In Carrboro, TBB endorsed the ‘Carrboro Better Together’ slate of Catherine Fray, Jason Merrill and Eliazar Posada for Town Council. The website also endorsed Barbara Foushee for mayor, though she’s running unopposed.

And in the crowded race for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board, Triangle Blog Blog chose to endorse Rani Dasi, Barbara Fedders, Vickie Feaster Fornville, and Honoria “Honor” Middough.

Triangle Blog Blog is a progressive online blog whose board consists of five residents: Geoff Green, John Rees, Martin Johnson, Melody Kramer, and Stephen Whitlow. TBB’s writers have pushed for aggressive action to address Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s housing crunch by building more housing units, and they’ve endorsed the town’s efforts to promote “connected communities” by expanding bike lanes, sidewalks, greenways, and public transit.

TBB’s writers have also sparred publicly with the organizers of CHALT, the Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town, which has pushed back against many recent proposed housing developments. Consequently, the blog’s viewpoint usually falls in line with that of NEXT NC, the advocacy group that competes with CHALT most directly. But TBB and NEXT’s action fund did not endorse exactly the same slate of candidates: NEXT endorsed Erik Valera over Amy Ryan for Chapel Hill Town Council.

Early voting began this week for all of Orange County’s 2023 municipal elections, as the county’s first of five early voting sites opened on Thursday, October 19. The early voting period will run through November 4, and residents will then have Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.
