Carrboro Mayor Damon Seils shared his support on Thursday of three candidates seeking the available seats in this fall’s town council race.
In a newsletter to supporters, which was also shared on social media, the outgoing mayor said he is endorsing the trio of Eliazar Posada, Catherine Fray and Jason Merrill.
“I have known Catherine, Jason, and Eliazar for years through their work and advocacy in local government and the community,” Seils wrote. “Their experience with and understanding of the crucial issues facing Carrboro make them uniquely positioned among the candidates in this election to lead our community.”
The three candidates are actively campaigning together as a slate, with the name of “Carrboro Better Together.” Seils said their commitment of leading a town council that emphasizes planning for diverse housing options, accessible public transit, and sustainable climate action aligns not only with his hopes for the town, but the current iteration of the town council’s wishes.

From left to right: Eliazar Posada, Catherine Fray and Jason Merrill are running together for the three available seats on Carrboro’s Town Council.
“These are the same priorities so many of you worked hard to include in the award-winning Carrboro Connects Comprehensive Plan, which the Town Council adopted just last year,” he wrote. “Catherine, Jason, and Eliazar understand what it takes to make this plan a reality.
“For over a decade,” Seils continued, “I have served on the Town Council and been privileged to work closely with great colleagues and community members. As we face key transitions in the coming years, I know the opportunity to elect Catherine, Jason, and Eliazar in support of their vision of an affordable, equitable, accessible future is one we cannot pass up.”
Fray, Posada, and Merrill are joined in the race for Carrboro Town Council by April Mills and Stephanie Wade. Posada is the lone incumbent running for re-election, as Susan Romaine and Sammy Slade each said they would not be seeking their same seats again.
Seils, meanwhile, will be leaving after one term as Carrboro’s mayor and eight years serving as a town council member. Barbara Foushee is running unopposed to succeed him — meaning her town council seat will have two years left on it and could be filled by appointment or a special election.
Thursday marked exactly two weeks until early voting begins in Orange County for 2023 municipal elections, as the county’s first of five early voting sites will open on Thursday, October 19. The early voting period will run through November 4, and residents will then have Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.
