As the local election season is beginning to heat up, a trio of candidates for Carrboro Town Council have teamed up to run as a slate to offer voters.
Eliazar Posada, Catherine Fray and Jason Merrill announced on Thursday the formation of the ‘Carrboro Better Together’ bloc as they seek the three available seats on the local government’s elected body. Their campaigns’ alert on the partnership said each are united by shared values and a collective vision for Carrboro that is “welcoming to all” through making the town affordable, equitable and accessible.
“I am excited to join Jason and Catherine as we look to the future of Carrboro,” wrote Posada in the announcement. “I know that with the three of us on Council, we will ensure Carrboro continues to implement our Town’s values and plans that will move us closer to making Carrboro a home for all.”
“Catherine, Eliazar, and I are committed to creating a thriving Carrboro where everyone can benefit from sharing our town’s amazing resources,” added Merrill. “As Town Council members, we will work together so that all the citizens of Carrboro can do better together.”
“Eliazar, Jason and I have our own strengths,” said Fray. “We aren’t in lockstep by any means, but I trust them both to always put the public interest first. I’m looking forward to a productive collaboration.”
Posada is running for his first full term on the town council, having won a special election 2022 to fill Damon Seils’ seat after he won the town’s mayoral race the year prior. Fray and Merrill, meanwhile, are running for the first time.
The ‘Carrboro Better Together’ slate pointed several policy examples all three of its candidates’ campaign share, like promoting affordable housing development, expanding public transit options, improving biking and pedestrian safety, and protecting the environment. Because of that, the group has already drawn an endorsement from sitting Carrboro Town Council member Danny Nowell.
“Between the three of them,” he said, “they bring a wealth of experience that Carrboro will need as we face some crucial transitions, as well as a comprehensive, intersectional understanding of what it will take to make our town truly inclusive, affordable, and sustainable for all of our residents.”
To help launch their partnership, the ‘Carrboro Better Together’ slate is hosting a public event on Sunday, September 17 at 1200 Hillsborough Road.
Posada, Fray and Merrill will be on the ballot with two other candidates: Stephanie Wade and April Mills. Early voting for all of Orange County’s local elections begins on Thursday, October 19 and Election Day is set for Tuesday, November 7.
