Multiple advocacy organizations announced endorsements of candidates in Orange County and Chatham County municipal elections this week.

The North Carolina Sierra Club said in a statement that the environmental advocacy group endorsements are largely based off candidates’ stances on climate change and how they plan to enact solutions to combat the problem on a local level.

In Carrboro’s Board of Aldermen race, the club endorsed candidates Sammy Slade and Damon Seils, while also endorsing incumbent mayor Lydia Lavelle as she runs unopposed. While there are three seats up for election to the board, the group only endorsed two candidates.

The club endorsed candidates Michael Parker, Sue Hunter, Amy Ryan and Tai Huynh in the Chapel Hill Town Council race as well as incumbent mayor Pam Hemminger.

For Hillsborough’s races on the Board of Commissioners, the Sierra Club endorsed Mark Bell, Matt Hughes and Evelyn Lloyd, all of whom are incumbent candidates. They also endorsed Jenn Weaver, who is running unopposed for mayor of Hillsborough.

In the Pittsboro Board of Commissioners race, candidates John Bonitz, Bridget Perry and Kyle Shipp all received the club’s endorsement.

“The Club believes that its endorsed candidates are the best leaders to accomplish the challenging work ahead in fulfilling our local governments’ obligations to act quickly to combat climate change and protect our environment for this and future generations,” the organization said in a statement.

CHALT, or the Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town advocacy group, also released the candidates it is endorsing in the Chapel Hill Town Council and mayoral races. Council candidates Jessica Anderson, Nancy Oates, Amy Ryan and Renuka Soll all received endorsements, while incumbent Pam Hemminger received the group’s endorsement for mayor.

Early voting for Orange County and Chatham County local elections will begin on October 16.
