A study examining the 20-mile stretch of NC 54 West between Graham and Carrboro is underway by the local Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The study is responding to a 2015 proposal to enlarge the corridor to a four-lane median divided road.

“I think at one time it was perhaps envisioned that this corridor would end up being four lanes the whole way, and I think this is more of an [opportunity to] step back and look at it,” said Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle.

According to a statement released by the Town of Carrboro, the study seeks to address preservation of the area’s character, economic opportunity and vitality, environmental sensitivity, and transportation improvements for all users.

Three community meetings will take place will take place this week at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Rigmore House Event Center at 5501 NC Highway 54, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Graham Civic Center and 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carrboro Town Hall, which will offer the public opportunities to voice their opinions on the matter.
