Construction is underway on changes aimed at improving pedestrian safety at a Carrboro and Chapel Hill intersection.

Workers will be adding crosswalks and improving the sidewalks at the intersection of Merritt Mill Road, Brewer Lane and West Franklin Street. No changes will be done to the roads themselves, but drivers and pedestrians can expect to see additions around the area beginning this week.

Carrboro mayor Lydia Lavelle spoke about the project in a conversation with WCHL’s Aaron Keck. She said she believes the changes will make the intersection much safer.

“We think we arrived at a good solution that is definitely going to improve pedestrian and bicycle traffic,” Lavelle said. “It’ll also make crossing the street as you get into Chapel Hill a little more efficient.”

Plans to improve ways for pedestrians to cross the intersection have been considered as early as 2017. It’s been a challenge for foot traffic to easily and efficiently access the many businesses close to the intersection.

Lavelle made sure to stress that unlike the large construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Estes Drive and North Greensboro Street, this project will not significantly change the traffic patterns or road flow.

“It’s going to be shoring up the sidewalks, marking them better, having some new permanent markings for more direct pedestrian crossings, and a pedestrian-specific signal,” said Lavelle. “It should help increase safety greatly once it’s in there.”

Lavelle said they expect the project to be complete within the next month.
