The suspect in a fatal stabbing in Orange County over the weekend appeared in court while family members of the victim sat in the audience on Tuesday.

Mori Farrell Jr was arrested at a hotel in Burlington on Monday afternoon after the Orange County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of other local, state and federal agencies to locate and apprehend Farrell.

Farrell is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 50-year-old Anthony Latta in Cedar Grove early Saturday morning. Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood  said at the time there did not appear to be any threat to the general public. Warrants for Farrell’s arrest were then issued and the manhunt was underway after Blackwood said evidence indicated that Farrell had “participated in the murder.”

Farrell appeared before District Court Judge Beverly Scarlett on Tuesday. Two women in the courtroom identified themselves as family members of Latta but did not say anything during the first appearance. Scarlett appointed the Capital Defender Office to represent Farrell in the case.

Farrell is being held in the Orange County Detention Center without bond awaiting his next court appearance on January 8.
