Charges against a Chapel Hill man have been upgraded to first-degree murder after the victim in a recent stabbing, who is the suspect’s brother, died.

Chapel Hill Police said in an update on Wednesday that 26-year-old Scottie Levelle Clardy, of Durham, died at UNC Hospitals on Friday, July 27.

Clardy’s brother, 20-year-old Kareem Tay’shaun Shah, has been charged with stabbing Clardy last month on Nunn Street in Chapel Hill.

Shah and Clardy were initially transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment of injuries they both sustained. Shah was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital.

Documents show that Shah is accused of stabbing the victim in the throat.

Shah was given a $479,000 secured bond on the initial charge of attempted first-degree murder. He had a court date scheduled later this month for the first charge. An additional appearance has been added to the Orange County Court calendar for Wednesday on the upgraded charge.
