Millions of dollars worth of drugs were found in a Durham storage unit as a result of a traffic stop performed across the state.
On March 19, deputies from the Craven County Sheriff’s Office acted on a tip and conducted a traffic stop in their jurisdiction. As a result of the stop, information was developed about the location of a large quantity of drugs in Durham County, approximately 135 miles away.
Investigators from the Durham County Sheriff’s K9 unit, in collaboration with the Anti-Crime and Narcotics Unit, executed a search warrant at a storage facility located in Durham. While on scene, K9 Freddie was alerted to a container located inside a storage unit. When it was opened, K9 Freddie found approximately 13 kilos of uncut cocaine inside.
According to the sheriff’s office, once cut, the total drugs seized would amount to around 35,000 salable grams. The total street value of the drugs seized is approximately $3.5-million dollars.
In addition to the drugs found inside the storage unit, Craven County deputies seized an additional three kilos of uncut cocaine, approximately $175,000 in cash, and firearms as a result of the traffic stop and subsequent searches in their jurisdiction. Two men were charged.
Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said this joint investigation shows how effectively law enforcement across the state can work together.
“This is a clear example of the excellent working relationship we have with fellow law enforcement across the entire state of North Carolina,” Birkhead said. “In this specific case, we will continue working with sheriff’s offices across the state to fight crime.”
This investigation is currently ongoing in both counties.
