A verbal dispute escalated into a fight on Friday that left one person being treated with cuts from a deadly weapon and another facing an assault charge.

An alert from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said around 4:30 p.m., deputies were called to the 5100 block of Barbee Chapel Road — in the Chapel Hill part of Durham County — which is near the Finley Forest Condominiums neighborhood. Upon arrival, investigators learned a victim and a person known to the victim got into a verbal fight before it turned physical. The victim was “cut multiple times” and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect — who fled the scene, but was later located and taken into custody — is 45-year-old Travis Rigsby of Durham. Friday’s alert said Rigsby faces a charge of Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, but did not specify what weapon was used in the altercation. As of that night, he is being held at the Durham County Detention Center without bond.

No additional information is being made public at this time, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.
