Durham County authorities are investigating the Tuesday afternoon shooting of a teenager who was found at a Chapel Hill intersection before being taken to the hospital.

A release from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call around 3:45 p.m. from the intersection of Barbee Chapel Road and Farrington Mill Road about a person who was suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, deputies found a 16-year-old victim shot in the face and EMS transported them to a nearby hospital. Tuesday’s release said the teenager’s injury is serious, but is believed to be non-life threatening.

The sheriff’s office determined the victim was injured at another location and driven to the area of Barbee Chapel and Farrington Mill Roads before a bystander called emergency services. The area is part of Chapel Hill — but since it is in the Durham County portion, the Durham sheriff’s office was the responding agency. Deputies closed the intersection for several hours on Tuesday as part of the investigation, but reopened the area by the end of the day.

Tuesday’s release said the Durham County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for any additional information it may have as part of its ongoing investigation. People are encouraged to call the office directly at 919-560-0900.
