A Carrboro man is in police custody after a standoff that lasted just over 24 hours came to an end on Thursday afternoon.

Carrboro Police were initially attempting to take an individual into custody on an involuntary mental commitment around 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to a town official. The individual then ran into his home on Laurel Avenue and barricaded himself in the home with a handgun, the Carrboro spokesperson said.

Carrboro Police and other law enforcement agencies were in communication with the individual through Wednesday night and into Thursday. Authorities used tear gas Thursday afternoon in an attempt to flush the individual from the home.

There were no hostages and, ultimately, no injuries were reported throughout the event.

Police evacuated homes in the surrounding area and asked residents to stay clear of the area while the situation was ongoing.

Those residents were allowed to returned to their home on Thursday evening, according to police.
