Chapel Hill University Inn has closed its doors after decades of service along Fordham Boulevard. Signs posted on the front door Monday said that the hotel was permanently closed.

The Time Out location that was adjacent to the hotel closed in recent years and there has been increasing development activity in the area.

The hotel has been in operation as there has been increasing development in Chapel Hill’s Blue Hill District, which allows for developers to move projects that meet certain criteria through the approval process without having to come before the Town Council. Most recently, work has begun clearing the site of the former Park Apartments. Demolition started earlier this fall and site work is ongoing for the project, with plans calling for an apartment complex to be built along with a new roadway bisecting the site and connecting to Ephesus Church Road.

It is unclear what will become of the hotel site.
