The Anderson-Thorpe-Battle Breakfast Club released its 2023 Chapel Hill and Carrboro municipal endorsements, as well as its Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education race on Monday.
The local organization — known for championing racial justice causes since being founded in the 1970s — is endorsing Jess Anderson in the race for Chapel Hill mayor, as well as Melissa McCullough, Theodore Nollert, Amy Ryan and Erik Valera in a crowded field running for the Chapel Hill Town Council.
Over in Carrboro, the breakfast club is endorsing the trio of candidates running as the ‘Carrboro Better Together’ slate: Catherine Fray, Jason Merrill and Eliazar Posada. Barbara Foushee, who is running unopposed for Carrboro’s mayor position, also picked up the group’s support.
In the CHCCS Board of Education race, the breakfast club endorsed incumbents Rani Dasi and Deon Temne plus first-time candidates Vickie Feaster Fornville and Mariela Hernandez from the dozen people actively campaigning.
The breakfast club is named after local racial justice leaders Hank Anderson, who was the club’s founder, Bill Thorpe and Fred Battle. In the past, the club has endorsed candidates over whether their platforms met its criteria of addressing racial inequities and making the community more inclusive to all members. This year, the breakfast club invited all of the candidates to speak with their members and followed up with phone calls for some who couldn’t make it. Using those conversations, and candidates’ responses in public forums, the group’s members wrote their votes for endorsements on secret ballots. Currently, the club’s president is Herman Marrel Foushee.
Early voting begins this week for all of Orange County’s 2023 municipal elections, as the county’s first of five early voting sites will open on Thursday, October 19. The early voting period will run through November 4, and residents will then have Election Day on Tuesday, November 7 as their final opportunity to cast their votes.
