
The observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19 will affect local government services around the Orange County community. Here’s what residents can expect this year:
Town of Chapel Hill
Most town offices will be closed Monday.
Residential trash normally collected Monday will be collected Wednesday, Jan. 21. Curbside recycling collection will be delayed by one day. Commercial trash will not be collected, and collections will be completed by the end of the week.
The Chapel Hill Public Library will be closed.
Chapel Hill Transit will run its Sunday routes Monday. The EZ Rider will run 8:15 a.m. to 6:52 p.m.
The Hargraves Community Center, Corner Teen Center and Community Center indoor pool will also be closed. The Homestead Aquatic Center, Community Center (apart from the indoor pool) and Nate Davis, Sr. Gymnasium will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Town of Carrboro
Carrboro town offices will be closed on Monday. Monday’s yard waste collection will be picked up on Tuesday. For more information, and for information on the Town of Carrboro’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration Saturday, click here.
Town of Hillsborough
Hillsborough town offices will be closed on Monday. Solid waste routes will not be serviced and residential waste collection will occur on Tuesday, Jan. 20 for both Monday and Tuesday’s routes. Recycling collection will be delayed to Thursday, Jan. 22.

Orange County
Orange County Government offices will be closed on Monday. Recycling collection throughout the week will be delayed by one day.
In addition, Orange County Animal Services will be closed. Anyone with an animal-related emergency is asked to call 911. The Orange County Main Library in Hillsborough and the Southern Branch Library in Carrboro will both be closed on Monday. For more information, click here.
