The MLK Day holiday makes this a short week, but it’s still a busy one for local government. The Chapel Hill Town Council gets the spotlight this time, as council members are set to vote on amendments to the town’s Land Use Management Ordinance, or LUMO – a major step in a long process of streamlining the town’s development process to facilitate new housing, particularly so-called “missing middle” options (like duplexes and accessory dwellings) that are bigger than apartments but smaller than single-family homes. Also this week: the Carrboro Town Council will get a briefing on transportation projects, and the Durham City Council will consider a couple housing proposals of their own.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 20. Tops on this week’s agenda: council members will get an update on transportation projects, including greenways and bike & pedestrian improvements. Read the full agenda here.

Orange County Commissioners meet Tuesday, January 20, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Click here for their agenda, which includes an agreement with the town of Carrboro for the operation of the new Drakeford Library Complex, and the selection of projects for this year’s Community Climate Action Grants.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 21. There’s one big item on the agenda: council members will vote to approve amendments to the town’s Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO). The amendments are intended to expand housing options by easing some requirements, streamlining the development process (including the elimination of Concept Plan reviews), and encouraging the construction of so-called “missing middle” housing options like duplexes and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 20. Commissioners will receive a quarterly budget update and approve a resolution celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Haw River Trail. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

The Durham City Council meets twice this week, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, and again at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 22. Tuesday’s agenda includes a zoning request for a proposed 60-unit apartment building near Brier Creek and an annexation request for the proposed Brittmore development, which would build up to 115 townhouses and single-family homes on Farrington Mill Road. The agenda for Thursday’s work session includes a presentation on the city’s Digital Equity plan. Get links to both agendas here.

Finally, the Durham school board is holding a closed-session meeting at noon on Wednesday, January 21, to discuss a personnel matter.
