A Hillsborough man faces a first-degree attempted murder charge following an arrest and a stabbing in the northern part of town.

A release from the Hillsborough Police Department on Tuesday said authorities formally charged 24-year-old Kenneth Anthony Castellano in recent days due to his connection to a stabbing that took place on Thursday, May 30.

Police officers received a report of someone suffering stab wounds at the Lloyd’s Quickie Mart at 110 N.C. 86 North around 5 p.m. The victim, who was reported as in critical condition at the time, was taken to Duke Hospital for treatment where their condition improve to “serious but stable,” according to police. While investigating the incident, officer learned the stabbing took place at a residence in the 100 block of Lawndale Avenue and the victim had driven to the convenience store to look for help after suffering the injuries.

Castellano, though, was not initially arrested in Orange County. Hillsborough Police said Tuesday he was located at the ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, N.C., where he had checked himself in with injuries around 10 p.m. on May 30. Greenville Police arrested the 24-year-old after being discharged from medical care and Castellano was transferred to the Orange County Detention Center on Monday. Hillsborough Police said it is not clear if Castellano’s injuries were related to the stabbing incident.

After his transfer, the Orange County magistrate set Castellano’s bond at $200,000 over the attempted murder charge, plus another $1,000 from a previous, outstanding order for arrest. Hillsborough Police confirmed to Chapelboro the outstanding order stemmed from not appearing in court in Wake County for a 2020 assault charge.
