After a months-long national search, the Town of Carrboro announced its pick for its new town manager: Patrice Toney, a current assistant city manager for Winston-Salem’s government.

The town shared a release Thursday with its pick, saying Toney’s hiring will be confirmed in a 6 p.m. special meeting.

“The Carrboro Town Council is pleased to announce the hiring of Patrice Toney as the next Town Manager,” said Carrboro Mayor Barbara Foushee. “Ms. Toney brings over 25 years of local government experience, having served as an assistant city manager and interim city manager.  She has also served as the director of the budget and evaluation office and has overseen multiple departments including community development, human relations/DEI and the fire and police departments. We look forward to her leadership and welcome her to the community.”

“Accepting the role as Town Manager of Carrboro is truly an honor,” Toney added in the release, “and I look forward to providing leadership in carrying out the progressive policies and program directives of the Mayor and Town Council, while being responsive to the needs of the residents of Carrboro.”

As assistant city manager, and briefly interim city manager for Winston-Salem, Toney managed a $500 million annual operating budget and six-year capital improvement plan during her eight years with the city government. Prior to that, she was a senior budget and management analyst, senior analyst, public health outreach supervisor and police department communications operator for the Forsyth County government. She has earned several recognitions for her work, including being an ICMA Workplace Diversity Conference Scholarship winner and recipient of an Outstanding Women Leaders Award by the Winston-Salem mayor and city council.

Toney will assume the permanent role after Richard White III left the Town of Carrboro in November. White served for more than two years, and assistant town manager Marie Parker has been operating in the interim role since his departure.

According to Carrboro’s release, Toney will begin her new position as town manager starting May 6 with a salary of $195,000.
