With Carrboro Town Manager Richard White III set to depart in two months, the town government has cemented its interim option and begun the long-term search for his replacement.

A release from the Town of Carrboro on Friday said following a closed session of the town council the day prior, the council members appointed Assistant Town Manager Marie Parker to serve in the interim role beginning Saturday, November 4. Parker joined Carrboro in June after serving on the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority in Wilmington and working as the general manager at GoRaleigh.

Additionally, the town council formed its plan to issue a request this week for proposals from executive recruitment firms who will conduct the national search for its next permanent town manager. Carrboro said once a firm is chosen, it will begin a search expected to last into spring 2024 — which puts the local government’s potential selection of its new town manager in line with the new fiscal year.

White announced in August he would be leaving Carrboro after two years with the town to take the position of deputy city manager with the City of Salisbury. With the selection of a new town manager, it will represent its third permanent manager in 11 years, as White’s predecessor David Andrews spent nine years in the role after being hired in 2012.

The town manager’s role is to execute the policies set by the town council and is an appointed position by that group of elected officials. For Carrboro, that means the manager coordinates its 200 town employees, its annual $81 million budget, and day-to-day operations.

Meanwhile, the Carrboro Town Council is soon set to return to regular public meetings following a summer break. The elected officials have a work session scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 in Town Hall at 7 p.m.
