The Town of Carrboro announced its choice for the local government’s next town clerk on Tuesday.

A release from Carrboro said Lamar Joyner began the position on Monday after his selection was finalized earlier this month. Joyner joins after spending six years as the clerk for the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, and the deputy director for Forsyth County’s Board of Elections for more than a decade prior to that.

“Mr. Joyner is a great addition to our organization and community, the Town Council welcomes him and looks forward to working with him,” said Carrboro Mayor Barbara Foushee in the town’s release.

“I am confident that I can be an asset to the organization and help the Town meet its goals,” Joyner added in the alert.

The town clerk position in Carrboro is known for maintaining official records, preparing updates to the town code, and putting together both agendas and minutes of the town council’s meetings. Another responsibility for the role also oversees a deputy town clerk position.

Joyner assumes the job after Wesley Barker left the Town of Carrboro in October, taking the town clerk position in Black Mountain after just less than two years in the role. Joyner’s hiring fills one of two critical gaps in the town staff — as the town council is continuing its search of a permanent town manager. Richard White III left the position in the fall and Assistant Town Manager Marie Parker has been running town operations in the interim.
