In order to better serve residents without access to information through the internet, the Town of Carrboro has begun utilizing a system of neighborhood message centers.

These message centers are described as outdoor kiosks intended to display flyers and notices containing information about free testing sites and schedules for COVID-19, food distribution events, housing assistance, and opportunities to improve quality of life for families. A release from the town says information on vaccine distribution will also be posted in the near future.

Residents may also use the message centers to share information with each other.

The first message center in Carrboro was put up on Christmas Eve at the Rocky Brook Mobile Home Park, a community of about 40 homes in a flood-prone area where Greensboro Street dips to its lowest point near Morgan Creek.

The town’s release says staff are hoping to eventually expand from a small network into more communities, neighborhoods and commercial centers.

“During these unprecedented times of COVID-19, it is vital that we are able to provide critical news to the community,” Carrboro Communications Manager Catherine Lazorko said. “We recognize that many are not plugged into social media or email. A public message center may serve as a simple but direct avenue to reach people where they live.”
