The Maxwell Football Club revealed its annual preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award on Friday, with UNC sophomore quarterback Sam Howell making the cut.

The award has been around since 1937 and honors the College Player of the Year.

Howell posted one of the best seasons ever by a true freshman quarterback in 2019, setting a new FBS record for his age group with 38 touchdown passes to go along with 3,641 yards through the air.

In addition, he threw for at least two touchdown passes in all 13 of the Tar Heels’ games and was named MVP of the Military Bowl–which was the program’s first bowl win since 2013.

Howell is seeking to become just the second Tar Heel to win the Maxwell Award, with Charlie “Choo-Choo” Justice being the first back in 1948.
