A greenway path near Chapel Hill neighborhoods is seeing some maintenance done over the next few weeks.

The Town of Chapel Hill’s Parks and Recreation Department is working to repair parts of the multi-modal path that begins at Cleland Drive. Work crews have been patching up damages or deterioration to the asphalt and will continue for at least another week. People using the path, which connects Cleland Drive to Ridgefield Road by running parallel to Fordham Boulevard, will see signs posted in the next few days warning of any active work being done to the asphalt.

The maintenance comes after recent delay to a proposed sidepath project that would extend the existing path down to Willow Drive. The Fordham Boulevard Sidepath Project was advanced with design approval from Chapel Hill’s Town Council in March. But due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and significant changes to how the North Carolina Department of Transportation is funding projects, the sidepath extension has been put on hold.

Marcia Purvis is the project manager for the Fordham Boulevard Sidepath Project. She recently told Chapelboro while state funding for the project is now frozen, the town hopes to present updated concepts for traffic calming measures to residents within the next month. A report on the condition of trees set to be cleared due to the sidepath’s construction is also expected to be shared with the public soon. Both of those issues were among neighborhood residents’ concerns about the project.

More information on the Fordham Boulevard Sidepath Project can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill’s website.
