A prominent Chapel Hill institution will play host to some high-profile federal government and technology leaders next week.

A Group of 20 (G20) event, called the G20 Innovation Ministerial, is set to be held at the Carolina Inn on Tuesday, September 1 and Wednesday, September 2. Hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the forum will gather artificial intelligence leaders from across 20 countries to hear speakers and panels discussing how AI and emerging technologies can shape both economic growth and global innovation.

According to multiple international outlets, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk are among the guest speakers at the event, with Axios reporting Altman and Huang will take part in-person. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios will help conduct several of the conversations.

As a result, visitors to the ministerial, media members and security are expected to swarm the hotel on the corner of Cameron Avenue and Columbia Street. The Town of Chapel Hill issued a release on Thursday warning community members of increased traffic and security measures as a result of the G20 event.

“You’ll notice increased law enforcement presence downtown, especially around the Carolina Inn,” said the town’s release. “The Chapel Hill Police Department is coordinating with the University, as well as regional, state, and federal agencies, to keep community safety a top priority.”

“We’re just asking everyone to plan ahead, give yourself a little extra time to get yourself where you’re going,” Chapel Hill Mayor Jess Anderson added in an interview with 97.9 The Hill. “We’ll continue to keep the community informed as we get closer to the meetings, and a good way to stay up-to-date is to make sure you’re signed up for OC Alerts and AlertCarolina.”

The United States is playing host to G20 events this year, as it rotates among member countries. The Innovation Ministerial will follow a pair of others held in North Carolina in prior days: a meeting for finance and central bank deputies, followed by the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Ministerial, are set for Saturday, August 29 through September 1 at Asheville’s Omni Grove Park Inn. The country’s series of G20 events culminates in December with a leaders’ summit in Miami, Fla.
