The town of Carrboro is looking for community input ahead of the creation of two murals in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. It is seeking high school students’ submissions for mural designs and community ideas for quotes from Dr. King to be featured in the park. The deadline for both is Friday November 1.
For the murals, Carrboro is seeking designs for two murals in the park designed by high school students who live in the town. The murals, which should commemorate King, will be on the 18-foot east wall and 28-foot west wall of the park’s restroom facility. Every student who submits a design will earn two service-learning hours for their artwork and those with the winning submissions will earn a $250 stipend.
Submissions for the murals should be turned in to Carrboro’s Recreation and Parks Administrative Office by 4:30 on November 1. Forms and requirements for submissions can be found here.
In addition, the town wants contributions from community members of quotes from King that embody his messages. Eight quotes will be selected to be featured on placards along the park’s walking trail. The only requirements are a quote is no more than 80 characters and all submissions are by residents of the town. Any quotes should be sent to recparks@townofcarrboro.org and submissions have the same deadline as the mural submissions.
The winning mural submissions will be on display at the park starting in January 2020. From February to April, many young artists will have the chance to work with Orange County artist Michael Brown on installing the mural designs.
