When students return to Carrboro High School on Monday, August 23, they will see a new mural adorning the building.

The Town of Carrboro shared a release Wednesday unveiling a new mural welcoming students to the school and featuring its jaguar mascot. The Carrboro High School Class of 2021, who had not attended classes in the building for much of the last year and a half, helped to conceive and paint the mural.

“Murals tell our community what and who we care about, what historical events need to remain in our hearts, not just for the times we live in but for future generations,” said a letter from the parents of the Class of 2021. “We, as a community, we need to tell these children that we see them and acknowledge this trauma and that we recognize that what they are living through is not normal, or fair, nor will it be easy to move on from. A mural will tell them that it is okay to feel sad about what they lost. That acknowledgment is key to their eventual healing.”

Located on an outside wall facing Carrboro High’s football stadium and other athletic facilities, the mural also features bees as a nod to Carrboro’s affiliation with Bee City USA, a program seeking to make urban areas more suitable for pollinators.

“[The students] wanted something bright, vibrant, and unlike other school murals that are designed to be intimidating to opposing teams,” said Loren Pease, who served as one of the lead muralists for the project. Pease’s son is a rising sophomore at the school.

The mural was completed in July, according to the town government. Its $3,000 cost was supported mainly through fundraising efforts by Pease and the Town of Carrboro.
